Whether you've hired a mover and are doing the packing yourself or going full DIY, these tips will help you get everything prepared safely for transport to your new home.
Packing China & Dishes
Select a sturdy carton and place a 7 to 10cm (3-4?) layer of lightly crushed paper on the bottom.
Place several layers of wrapping paper on your working table. Place one plate on the wrapping paper and fold the corner of one or two sheets diagonally over the plate. Place another plate on top and fold another piece of paper over it. Add two more plates in the same manner. It is not advisable to put more than 4 plates in one bundle. Fold over each side of paper. Roll the plates over, keeping the sides of paper straight. You will have a neat bundle.
Place the bundle into the carton in a standing position on edge and continue in this way until you have a row of wrapped plates across the carton. Keep the row snug so that the plates will stand up straight. If there are not enough plates to complete the bottom row, use sturdy pieces such as bowls, gravy boats, or platters to do so. Fill any spaces with crushed paper. Then place another layer of crushed paper over the layer of plates just packed.
Fill the next layer with other large, strong items. Always keep the wrapped items snug in each tier and add a cushion of paper after the completion of each tier. If there is still room, you can complete the carton with cups, but always keep enough space at the top of the carton for a cushion of lightly crushed paper. Fold the top flat, seal with tape, and label.
Small Appliances
Radios, coffee makers, etc. should be wrapped individually before being placed in a carton. Add a bit of crushed paper to cushion the items in the box. Label the box fragile to ensure careful handling. Any kitchen appliances that hold liquid (water, grease, oil) should be carefully drained, cleaned and dried prior to packing. You may wish to wrap any persistently greasy or damp items in plastic to further protect the rest of your shipment. If you are placing items in storage or anticipating a longer period of transport (e.g. cross-country move) you will need to be especially diligent to ensure there are no liquids or grease in these packed items.
Books, CDs, DVDs
Pack on edge in small cartons (e.g. 2cu. ft.) so they are not too heavy to lift.
Brooms, Curtain Rods, Mops
Tie or tape into bundles.
Clothing
Hanging clothes can be kept neat and clean in a specialized wardrobe carton. One carton will hold about 30 garments on hangers.
If you are moving locally, clothing and other soft items may often be left in drawers.
It it recommended to add a sheet of paper to keep things in place and dust free.
Otherwise folded clothes may be packed, as linens, in larger cartons - 4cu. ft. or 5 cu. ft., depending on the weight of the contents.
Don't overstuff the cartons or they will be weakened and hard to close.
Flowers and Plants
Accepted for shipment only at owner’s risk. Pack in cartons taller than the plants and use lots of paper between the pots to keep plants upright.
Pictures and Mirrors
Pack on their edges, in appropriately sized cartons. Use 2 cu. ft. Cartons for smaller pictures. Telescoping mirror cartons are very good to protect larger pictures and mirrors. Support and separate with lots of paper.
Table Lamps and Shades
Pack the lamps and shades separately in cartons. Both are fragile and plenty of crushed paper should be used to cushion the items. Cover shades with kitchen towels or tissue paper and handle them only by the wires.
Valuables
High-value and critical items such as important documents, jewellery, heirlooms, etc. should be transported by you or sent by registered mail. Your movers cannot accept responsibility for such items.
Mattresses and Box Springs
Use our mattress bags to keep these items clean and protected during transit.
Power Tools and Outdoor Equipment
Swings, sheds should be dismantled and packed in mid-size cartons. Power tools can be packed in smaller to mid-size cartons depending on weight. Tools may need to be removed from tool chests and packed separately given the weight of a full tool chest. Cartons containing tool sets and tools should be labelled and you should keep an inventory of the contents of each so that it's easier to track everything as you unpack at the your new home. Where's my socket set? Oh, yes! It's in Carton 1A but I put the wrench in Carton 1B.
Flammable Substances
Must be disposed of or taken with you in your personal vehicle.
